River carioca

The River Carioca used to be the main water source for Rio´s residents, and the word carioca is the demonym for people born in the city. Today, however, the River Carioca is no longer part of the landscape. For most of its course, it flows underground in pipes, passing beneath streets, squares, avenues and buildings, until it flows –polluted– into the Guanabara Bay. Follow the course of the river and see what it’s like today
